Designing AI Research That Works Across Disciplines
This April, faculty members, research staff and IT support staff from across all 12 colleges gathered at the William and Ida Friday Institute for Educational Innovation for an AI research development workshop hosted by ORI and the DSA. Throughout the session, they compared ideas, identified connections and began shaping work that could grow into larger, coordinated AI research efforts going forward. Countless thought-provoking conversations were held over the course of the day, ranging from new AI innovations in classrooms to bias, responsible use and ethics in AI.
Calling Fall 2026 AI Hot Topics Panelists and Topic Submissions
The spring 2026 semester covered a vast range of topics, including AI in geospatial analysis, textiles, museum curation and more. Moving into Fall 2026, the DSA is excited to announce that sign-up for session panelists is open once again!

AI Hot Topics On the Road
Early this June, the NC Department of Health and Human Services hosted the DSA for an on-the-road AI Hot Topics session, including a DHHS AI Literacy Kickoff led by Robin Jones and a discussion of AI Without the Hype: What It Is, What It Isn’t, and Why DHHS Cares, led by Dr. Sarah Rhea. A fireside chat and Q&A were held afterward, covering topics such as workforce readiness, division engagement and responsible use. A huge thanks goes out to NC DHHS for this wonderful collaboration!
Advancing K-12 Data Science Education Across North Carolina
This summer, DSA continued its work to expand data science education opportunities for K-12 students and educators across North Carolina. Through the Student Data Discovery Challenge, middle and high school students explored real-world datasets, built mathematical models and learned alongside mentors in a hands-on data science experience. At the same time, educators from across the state participated in the CS30 Curriculum Building Collaborative, working together during writing sprints to develop lessons, activities and instructional resources that support the growing implementation of CS30: Introduction to Data Science across the state of NC.
New Publication Highlights NC State’s ADAPT Model
DSA Executive Director Rachel Levy, former DSA postdoctoral scholar and instructor James B. Harr III and David Stokes, director of Data Science and AI Academic Programs, recently published an article examining NC State’s All-campus Data Science and AI Project-based Teaching and Learning (ADAPT) Model. The publication explores how the university’s academy model fosters interdisciplinary engagement in data science and AI, connecting students and faculty across disciplines through workforce-relevant, project-based learning.
DSA Faculty Director Co-Authors Open-Access Book on Data Science Consulting
Congratulations to DSA Faculty Director Emily Griffith and her co-authors on the publication of their new open-access book, Graduate Student Consulting in Data Science: A Practical Guide for Programs and Consultants. Drawing on years of experience leading graduate student consulting programs, the book provides practical guidance for institutions, faculty and students looking to build or strengthen data science consulting initiatives.

AI Fellows Uniting Interdisciplinary Leadership
We are thrilled to announce the launch of the inaugural NC State deans and Data Science and AI Academy AI Fellows Program at NC State! This cohort will streamline collaboration, leadership and interdisciplinary research in AI by bringing together specialized researchers from across all colleges.
AI Liaisons Strengthen AI Collaboration Across NC State
The AI Liaison program, coordinated by the Data Science and AI Academy and the NC State AI Advisory Group, continues to connect faculty and staff across NC State’s colleges and units to share knowledge, resources and best practices for AI. Serving as local connectors within their areas, AI Liaisons help promote responsible AI use, share university resources and strengthen communication between unit-level needs and university-wide AI initiatives.
