Bio

Dr. Uma Ravat brings a unique blend of academic expertise and industry experience to data science education as an Assistant Teaching Professor in the Department of Applied Probability and Statistics at University of California at Santa Barbara. Her research explores students’ curiosity towards probability and data science, how networks form in large STEM courses, and the applications of data science in studying dietary patterns and lifestyle diseases.

Previously a software engineer, database administrator, and project manager at E*Trade Financial, she now bridges industry and academia through teaching, mentoring and several initiatives. She leads a Global Leadership Exchange program with Keio University, Japan, has directed Data Science boot camps through the Program for Interdisciplinary Internships at Illinois (PI4), and is Co-PI on the California Learning Lab Data Science Pathways grant to expand access to quality data science education and career preparation.

A Project NExT Teaching Fellow and recipient of a PIC Math (Preparation for Industrial Careers in Mathematical Sciences) grant, she combines theoretical foundations with practical applications to prepare students for success in both academic and industry data science careers. She previously served as a Lecturer in Statistics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
