Exploring the Future of STEM Education: Introducing FLIP-STEM Hub

We’re thrilled to unveil the Fostering Learning, Identity, and Participation within Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (FLIP-STEM) Hub—a pioneering initiative set to redefine STEM education. Our mission is to tackle the grand challenge: “How can innovative technologies empower diverse middle school students to shape their identities and impact learning in unprecedented ways?”

Diving into Diversity

FLIP-STEM Hub is on a quest to celebrate the rich identities of racially, linguistically, and neurodiverse middle school students. We believe that understanding their experiences is key to unlocking innovative technologies grounded in artificial intelligence, augmented reality, place-based learning, and game-based learning.

Meet Our Design Justice Network

Our passionate team includes the Design Justice Network, Jessica Hunt, Krista Glazewski, Maria Coady, Rachel Levy, Shaun Kellogg, Amy Walter, and Taryn Shelton. Together, we bring a wealth of expertise in design justice, special education, gaming design, emergent technologies, multilingual education, data science, and more.

Goals and Vision

In Year 1, we’re embarking on a journey with Design Justice Frameworks, aiming to capture the essence of students’ experiences. A workshop with designjustice.org and collaboration with special education teachers in rural communities will shape our principles and design documents. We’re committed to creating an educational ecosystem where technology amplifies student voices, fostering inclusivity and participation in STEM.

Aligning with the College of Education’s Vision

FLIP-STEM Hub aligns seamlessly with our college’s strategic plan, emphasizing inclusiveness, diverse perspectives, and addressing social justice and equity in STEM education.

What’s Next

Year 2 holds exciting prospects as we seek funding for a prototype of a place-based technology solution. Proposals will be submitted to key programs, linking innovation to industry and federal support for school districts with budget constraints.
